Rugby, Cal vs University of British Columbia, 24 Feb 2010

Off to see more rugby! Oh, yeah - President Clinton is here, too. At the same time as the rugby match against University of British Columbia. Which I took the last 2 hours of the day off work for long before the Clinton visit was announced. :)

A conversion... this is probably the easiest thing to photograph in a rugby match. It takes a few seconds for the kicker to get ready, so plenty of time to frame the shot & wait for the kick...

He's about to catch this... honest! (And soon I shall consult my sources to find out the meaning of the "22" line, which seems to be the only numbering on the field - one such line on each side of the middle, of course.)

Up they go!

It's out - time to get moving.

Another conversion.

Another gorgeous day... grey sky against the hills, bright sun in the West.

A try about to happen. I'd moved to the other end of the field for the second half, hoping to see the game happening mostly in that end since it was our goal. By this time, my camera batteries were low & I realized I had not brought spares, which I usually do. I checked if the lady in the t-shirt booth also sold batteries, but no luck. I figured the low batteries might hold out if I was careful... I'd turn on the camera when they were nearly on top of us, try to get a shot, then turn it right back off. I didn't get many pictures in the second half, but I got this one! (And, if you look at the far end of the field, you can see Jerry!)

Sun through a bush.

The bleachers in Memorial Stadium. This is just such a majestic structure... I'm becoming increasingly enamored with UC Berkeley architecture. Which, naturally, leads to more pictures...

I took this picture, then promptly jumped up onto every ledge you can see & pranced along, like a skater without my board. Um. Exactly like.

There were some lovely puddles at the stadium after recent rains.

Lens flare is awesome!

Stained glass at Hertz Hall. Every time I take a picture of some building or another that I'm not familiar with, it leads me to 10 or so minutes of internet research on said building... it's as if I were learning something!

Another side of Hearst Gymnasium.

Oh, yeah... that Clinton visit. It happened to run exactly the same time as rugby. I came down through campus, ended up on Bancroft before reaching Haas, noticed a crowd ahead, turned my camera on in my jacket pocket as I got near, pulled out the camera & held it above the crowd to take a few pictures of the entourage pulling away, then proceeded without further delay to my car a bit farther on... the timing was such that I barely had to stop walking. This sort of thing makes me miss my journalism days rather acutely...
